THE HONGKONG IRISH FAMINE
FUND.
The Governmont House Committee for the relief of the Irish Famine held a meeting on the 11th instant, His Excellency the Governor being in the chair. There were present Admiral Conte. Sir John Smale, the Bos. E. L. O'Malley, the Hou. Ph. Ryrie, the Hon. Ng Choy, Dr. O'Brien, Mossrs. F. D. Sassoon, E. R. Belilios, J. Lou- rei o, A Coxon, H. M. Mehta, with Mr. Jackson as Hou. Treasurer, and Mr. Starkey as Hon. Secretary of the Committee. Mr. C. P. Chater, Mr. Mody, and one or two others were added to the Committee, and some Portuguese and Chinese ! gentlemen were elected as Sub-Committees for the purpose of working the subscription lists among their respective countryman. Mr. Sassoon aud Mr. Bolilios having each added $500 to the sum already collected, the Committee was able to send at once €1,000 as their first contribution to the Duchess of Marlborough's Fand. This sum has accordingly been transferred by the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank by telogram to the Bank of Ireland and was, on the 12th instant, paid to the order of the Duchess's Committee,
The Government House Committee of the Irish Famine Fund met again on the 17th inst. There were present His Excellency the Governor, as Chairman; the Chief Justice, Sir John Smale; the Attorney General, the Hon. E. L. O'Malley; the Hon. P. Ryrie, the Hon. Ng Choy, Messrs. į Belilios, Sassoon, Chater, Emory. Mehta, and Dr. O'Brien, with the Treasurer, Mr. Jackson, and the Hon. Secretary, Mr. Starkey. The members of the Chinese Sub-Committee were also present, viz.. Messrs. Wong Kwan Tong, Chin U Tin, Kwok Acheong, Li Tak Chung, Ch'an Lai K'am, Ch'an Sui Shang, and P'un Wing Chun. The minutes of the previous meet- ing having been read and confirmed, a report was made as to the present yield of the subscriptions, and a resolution was unanimously passed to the effect that the Gov-ruor be requested to tele- graph to the Duchess of Marlborough an nouncing that a second sum of £1,000 would this day be telegraphically transferred to her i fand. It was further resolved unanimously that His Excellency he requested to telegraph to the Lord Mayor of Dublin and to transfer to his fand also a sum of £1,000 that day. A letter I was then read which the Hon. Secretary and the Hou. Treasurer had addressed to the Duchess of Marlborough's Committee, reporting what had been done so far in this "dot on the ocean" for the benefit of the Emerald Isle. The Governor read to the Committee an extract from a communica- tion which had reached him describing a meeting held in the South of Ireland, presided over by the Mayor of Cork, at which it was stated on the authority of one of the members for the city of Cork that the distross was so great that it would require £500,000 to tide over it as far as the month of May. Mr. Bmory announ wi that the officers and men of the United States Aagship Richmond had raised a subscription contributing more than $300 to the fund. It was accordingly resolved that His Excellency the Governor be requested to send a letter to Admiral Patterson to acknowledge the generous assistance given to the good work the Committee had in hand. The subscription books which the Chinese Sub-Committee had printed, and which are in themselves a curiosity, were shown to the Committee by the Hon. Ng Choy, who mentioned that one of His Excelloney's Chinese friends had opened the list with a subscription of $1,000. The Honorary Treasurer announced that about $12,000 had so far been subscribed, including the sum of $2.000 from the Chamber of Com merce, and the sum of $2.500 from the Parsee community.
The Chinese residents are answering the ap- peal on behalf of the relief of the distress in Irs- land in a most munificent spirit. Up to the pro- sent time they have, we understand, collected no lows than $13,000 and the subsoription is not Dearly closed yet.
